Upcoming Events

Spring Dinner & Philanthropy Speaker---Monday, May 19th

Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter and Kappa Chapter will be meeting for a combined dinner and speaker for “Better Speech & Hearing Month.”  This year, our guest speaker will be the Clinic Director of the University of Washington’s Speech and Hearing Sciences Department. Come join us for dinner with Kappa collegians before the program.  Cost of the dinner is $8 and reservations are due by May 12th. Contact dzmembership@gmail.com for mailing instructions and event times.

 We will also be welcoming Kappa’s 27 member Senior Class into the alumnae chapter that evening and presenting them with graduation gifts.  We will also honor alumnae volunteers serving on Kappa’s Advisory Board and Kappa’s House Corporation Board. The election and installation of 2008-2009 alumnae chapter officers will conclude the program.


 Region X & Great Western Area Weekend—June 6-8th

This annual sisterhood event with collegians and alumnae will be held in Scottsdale, AZ.  There will be a variety of activities for both alumnae and collegians. The $45 registration fee covers: a casual Friday night event with National Vice President of Alumnae Affairs, hosted by Phoenix Area Alumnae; on Saturday—a True Colors Workshop, lunch, afternoon workshops and/or free time, an awards dinner followed by a fun night and dessert.  For details contact Ellyn at bsewell@aol.comRegistration forms must be postmarked by May 10th and sent to Region X’s RCC.  Alumnae are responsible for making their own lodging reservations, travel arrangements and the resulting costs.


 Delta Zeta National Convention—June 27th to July 1st

Alumnae from our Great Western Area and collegians from Region X will be heading towards Miami for the National Convention in June.

September Recruitment Activities with Kappa Chapter

Every September, area alumnae participate in mock recruitment with the collegiate chapter.  Traditionally, we have also held a Panini Party prior to the practice. It is too early for details…so check back later. 

Once the recruitment dates have been set by the University of Washington College Panhellenic, we will be looking for volunteers to assist the chapter during this week. 

Presentation Night:  This annual reception, sponsored by the alumnae chapter, will be in need of volunteers to help with the reception or to provide cookies. 


 Founders’ Day 2008

This annual event is still in the planning stages.  Traditionally, it is held in the month of October.  More information will be forthcoming in the months ahead.

Join the fun in 2008!

It’s not too late to join the Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter or to renew your 2008 membership.  Our dues year runs from January 1st to December 31st.

 Members receive our quarterly ten page newsletter as well as numerous post card announcements and reminders in between newsletters.  Regular newsletter features include:  National Headquarters, Great Western Area, Seattle and Overlake Alumnae Panhellenics, Philanthropy, “Kappa’s Korner” and “Spotlight on Alumnae.”   Alumnae are always encouraged to share updates on themselves in the newsletter to include mini reunions, announcements (engagement, wedding, birth), post graduate education plans/degrees earned, volunteer work, trips, career changes/promotions/scholarships etc. at any time.   Send in articles for the spring issue by May 5th to Newsletter Editor Ellyn at bsewell@aol.com

 To become a dues paying member please contact dzmembership@gmail.com.  Our alumnae chapter dues continue to be $30 for the calendar year, January 1st to December 31st.  (This includes $10 in National dues.)

Delta Zeta Activities

Here’s a quick look back on our  of events:

2008

March 8th—Seattle Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship Auction & Dinner

Fourteen Delta Zetas and guests supported this annual  scholarship fundraiser for University of Washington sorority women.  It was fun visiting with our panhellenic sisters, dining together and bidding on live and silent auction items.  Updates on the success of this event and number of scholarships awarded will be provided to our Delta Zeta Delegates in May and posted as available.

April 5th—45th Annual Flame Fantasy

This year’s fundraiser was held at Rock Salt Steaks & Seafood in Seattle.  The chapter raised funds for:  Listen and Talk, Gallaudet University and the Delta Zeta Foundation.   Details on the success of this dinner and auction will be forth coming. A special “thank you” to all of our Delta Zeta supporters, their families and guests.

The Greater Seattle Service Award was presented that evening to our 2008 Flame Fantasy Chairman.  Besides coordinating the dinner and auction, she also served as our Procurement Chair and Invitation Chair.  She was also a member of the 2007 Flame Fantasy Auction Committee

2007

December 2-3rd:  Holiday Social & Gift Wrapping Party

For the seventh consecutive year, we partnered with the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center to provide gifts for the children in their Early Childhood Education Programs.   Delta Zetas purchased toys for 55 children.  Later, we had a fun time wrapping all the gifts at our social. The wrapped gifts were delivered in time for Santa to personally hand them out to the children at the evening party.  Two of our members also assisted at the center’s party.

 

October 14th—Founders’ Day

Thirty-two alumnae and eighty collegians came together for our annual Founders’ Day celebration at Kappa Chapter at the University of Washington.  A salad buffet luncheon preceded our formal program honoring our six Founders.  Our special guests included Region X’s Regional Collegiate Coordinator and alumnae with milestone membership anniversaries.  These included:  Silver Certificates—25 years, The Order of the Golden Rose—50 years, The Order of the Pearl—65 years, and The Order of the Diamond—75 years.  Kappa Chapter also introduced their thirty new member class from Fall  Recruitment and presented several awards. 

 

September—Recruitment Activities for Kappa Chapter  

Alumnae assisted Kappa collegians during their Fall Recruitment.  Alumnae and guests gathered at Kappa Chapter for a Panini Party followed by a mock recruitment practice and house tours on September 7th.  Alumnae also conducted workshops during Perfection Week (September 1st-9th) and helped with refreshments during Recruitment Week (September 10th-15th). The alumnae chapter also hosted the Presentation Night reception for Kappa’s thirty new members, parents, guests and alumnae on September 20th.

 

July 30th—BBQ

Alumnae and guests enjoyed a potluck BBQ at a Seattle park on Lake Washington.

 

April 30th—Dinner & Speaker with Kappa Chapter

Alumnae and collegians dined together at Kappa Chapter prior to a combined philanthropy program.  A special education teacher from the University of Washington’s Experimental Education Unit was our guest speaker.  Fourteen graduating Seniors were welcomed into the alumnae chapter and presented with graduation gifts.  Kappa Advisors and Kappa House Corporation Board members were recognized for their volunteer work with Kappa Chapter for the 2006-07 school year.  Alumnae chapter officers were elected and installed for 2007-2008.

 

April 21st—44th Annual Flame Fantasy

This spring social and charity auction was held at Anthony’s Homeport in Seattle.  This special evening event attracted 115 Delta Zetas and guests and raised $7,463 for our three charities:  Listen and Talk, Gallaudet University and the Delta Zeta Foundation.  The 2007 Flame Fantasy Chair also received Greater Seattle’s Service Award for 2007.

 

March 9th—Seattle Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship Auction

Alumnae and guests attended this annual panhellenic social and fund raiser. This evening event’s proceeds of $13,000 provided for thirteen $1000 scholarships.  In 2007, Delta Zeta had two scholarship recipients.

 

February 3rd—Bunco Party

This lively social was held at a member’s home and provided a fun afternoon of sisterhood.

Philanthropy

Flame Fantasy is our major philanthropy event.  This auction fundraiser was held on April 5th in Seattle. We raised funds for Listen and Talk, Gallaudet University and the Delta Zeta Foundation.  (Details on this 2008 event will be posted at a later date.)

In November and December, 2007, alumnae supported the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center by providing wrapped gifts for the children at their annual Holiday Party.

In April, 2007, the alumnae chapter hosted their annual Flame Fantasy live and silent auctions and raised $7,463 for Listen and Talk, Gallaudet University and the Delta Zeta Foundation.

2006 Delta Zeta National Convention Awards

 The Gertrude Houk Fariss Award was presented to both Kappa Chapter and the Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter for Outstanding Alumnae-Collegiate Relations.  The chapters previously received this award in 2002.  This is a traveling silver punch bowl to be used by both chapters until the next National Convention in June 2008 in Miami, Florida.

 Kappa Chapter received the Silver Membership Award for 23 Consecutive Years of Making Quota during Recruitment.

 Greater Seattle received the Alumnae Chapter Excellence Award.  This silver tray award is presented to the top six alumnae chapters.  Greater Seattle previously received this award in 2000 and 2004.

 Greater Seattle received the Philanthropy Excellence Award.  This silver tray award was presented to the top five alumnae chapters for their outstanding philanthropic work.  Previously the chapter received this award in 2002.

Kappa Chapter News

2008

In January, Kappa Chapter conducted an officer training workshop for their newly elected officers.  Helping with this workshop were 2007 elected officers and members of the Kappa Advisory Board.  Installation of the 2008 officers was held in mid January.

 

Kappa’s 2008 President attended the Delta Zeta Presidents Leadership Academy in Dallas in February.

 

Kappa Chapter is sponsoring a candidate for the Miss Greek Pageant to be held on the University of Washington campus in April.  The entire chapter is helping with fund raising activities with proceeds benefiting the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

 

A Relay for Life team is being sponsored by Kappa Chapter.  This event, benefiting the American Cancer Society, will be held on the University of Washington campus in May.

 

In June, several Kappa representatives will be attending the Region X Weekend in Arizona along with other Delta Zeta collegiate chapter delegates.


Kappa House Corporation Board is looking for alumnae volunteers to help manage the chapter house.  There are both formal and informal positions available depending on an alumna’s interest and availability.

2007

In September, Kappa Chapter made quota (30 new members) for the 25th consecutive year during the University of Washington’s Fall Recruitment.  During Fall Quarter, all thirty new members were initiated into the chapter.

 

Kappa Chapter’s 2007 President was selected to participate in the Delta Zeta National Strategic Planning Committee’s meetings in Ohio.  This committee looked at all aspects of Delta Zeta Sorority and made recommendations to the Delta Zeta National Council.

 

During 2007, fifteen collegians graduated from the University of Washington and were welcomed into the Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter.

 

In June 2007, two chapter representatives attended the Norma Minch Andrisek Leadership Conference at Purdue University.

 

Seven new members were initiated during Spring Quarter 2007.

 

At the May 2007 University of Washington’s Greek Excellence Awards Banquet, Delta Zeta received the Excellence in Public Relations Award.  They were also finalists for the Greek Relations and Most Improved Chapter Awards.  Several individual awards were also presented to Delta Zetas for Academic Excellence.

 

Kappa Chapter earned several awards at the April 2007 Delta Zeta Region X Weekend.  This included:  Standard of Excellence Awards (3 stars) for Alumnae Relations, Ritual and Panhellenic. Several individual awards were presented including Outstanding Senior for Region X.

 

Delta Zeta’s representative to the 2007 Miss Greek Pageant and her sisters raised $11,038 for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC).  Over $2,000 in contributions were given by local Delta Zeta alumnae. Eleven sororities, on the University of Washington campus, participated in this event and raised a total of $80,000 for FHCRC.
