Flame Fantasy—April 10, 2010
Our 47th annual Flame Fantasy Auction and
Luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 10th in downtown
Bellevue. A professional jazz trio with vocals, saxophone, bass and
guitar will be a special addition to this year’s event. The proceeds
from the silent auction will benefit one of our national philanthropies,
The Painted Turtle Camp, as well as a local organization, Camp
Korey, located in Carnation, WA. Both camps are members of the
Association of Hole in the Wall Camps which was founded by Paul Newman
in 1988 and has served nearly 50,000 children. For more information on
this event, to donate to the silent auction and/or to volunteer your
time and talents with the Flame Fantasy Committee please contact

Spring Dinner with Kappa Chapter---May 24, 2010
Come join us at Kappa Chapter for a special evening with
our collegiate chapter members. Although all the details of this event
haven’t been worked out….we do have a date and place. We will keep you
posted online of the speaker, time and cost for the dinner. Check out

Founders Day— October 24, 2010
The date for our annual celebration with Kappa Chapter
will be on Sunday, October 24, 2010. Hope you will “save the date” and

Volunteer
Opportunities
Kappa Chapter’s CCD is looking for alumnae to serve on
the chapter’s Advisory Team. She will match your interest, talents,
skills and availability to the needs of the chapter.
Volunteers are also welcome to serve on various alumnae
chapter committees
(ie: Flame Fantasy, Philanthropy, Founders Day, Welcome,
as well as Kappa Chapter’s Fall Recruitment activities).

Membership
It is time to join or renew your membership in the
Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter for 2010. Our alumnae chapter dues
continue to be $30 for the calendar year, January 1st to
December 31st. Your membership also includes $10 in National
dues. To become a dues paying member please contact
dzmembership@gmail.com.
Alumnae membership dues support our chapter’s activities
with Kappa Chapter at the University of Washington, Founders Day and
other activities during the year. Members also receive our newsletter,
post card announcements and event invitations. Alumnae with email
addresses on file also receive periodic online updates.
The Delta Zeta News of the Greater Seattle Area
features articles of interest from: Delta Zeta National Headquarters;
our Great Western Area; Seattle and Overlake Alumnae Panhellenic;
University of Washington College Panhellenic Association; chapter
philanthropy projects; volunteer opportunities and news from Kappa
Chapter at the University of Washington. For the popular “Spotlight on
Alumnae” section, sisters are encouraged to share updates on
themselves. Topics may include: engagement, wedding or birth
announcements; milestone birthdays or anniversaries; mini reunions; post
graduate education plans, scholarships, and degrees earned; volunteer
activities; travel adventures; and/or career changes and promotions.

Delta Zeta Activities
Here is a quick look back at our 2009 calendar.
Bunco Party: Alumnae and
guests met on March 15th for a fun afternoon of conversation, food and a
lively game of bunco.
Flame Fantasy: This evening
charity auction was held at A Court in the Square in downtown Seattle on
April 18th. Attending this 46th annual Flame Fantasy were
Delta Zetas and their guests and supporters of Washington Sensory
Disabilities Services, based in Ellensburg, WA. This year’s fundraiser
raised $3,925 which benefited Washington Sensory Disabilities
Services, The Painted Turtle (a Hole in the Wall Camp), and the
Delta Zeta Foundation.
Spring Dinner and Speaker:
A dinner and program for “Better Speech & Hearing Month” was held on May
18th at Kappa Chapter. Representatives from the Hearing,
Speech & Deafness Center (HSDC) shared their personal experiences
with alumnae and collegians as well as an overview of current HSDC
programs available to children, families and adults. Kappa Chapter’s CCD,
Region Award recipients and members of Kappa’s Senior Class were also
honored.
Summer BBQ: Alumnae and
guests enjoyed an afternoon BBQ with all of the trimmings at a member’s
home on August 23rd.
Fall Recruitment: Alumnae
participated in Mock Recruitment at Kappa Chapter on September 11th.
A complimentary panini dinner was served prior to the mock recruitment
practice. The following week, alumnae helped with refreshments for
Recruitment Week and Preference Day. Alumnae sponsored Presentation
Night, a reception for Kappa Chapter’s new members and their parents,
prior to college classes resuming.
Philanthropy: Volunteers
worked five hour shifts at Camp Korey’s Fall Festival in
Carnation on October 10th. Monies raised from this event will help
provide children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses a summer
camping experience at Camp Korey.
Founders Day: Greater
Seattle Alumnae Chapter and Kappa Chapter co-hosted a Founders Day
celebration at the chapter house on October 25th. This included a buffet
salad and dessert luncheon followed by a special program. Alumnae with
milestone membership anniversaries and Kappa Chapter’s thirty-two new
members were also recognized.
Holiday Philanthropy Project:
This was the ninth year members donated new toys
for children in the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center’s Parent
Infant Program. A sisterhood party was held on November 22nd
to wrap the forty-six toys collected. Several members also volunteered
to help at the center’s Holiday Party on December 7th.
Overlake Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship Luncheon:
Delta Zetas and guests joined their
panhellenic sisters in supporting this annual scholarship fund raiser at
the Overlake Golf & Country Club in Medina on December 2nd. Monies
raised from this event provide scholarships to high school girls
attending a college or university the following academic year.

Philanthropy
In 2009, Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter raised $3,925
for Washington Sensory Disabilities Services, The Painted
Turtle (A Hole in the Wall Camp) and the Delta Zeta Foundation.
Proceeds from the Flame Fantasy auction in April supported
Washington Sensory Disabilities Services’ Family Weekend Retreat for
families of Deaf or hard of hearing children in Ellensburg, WA.
On October 10, 2009, alumnae volunteers worked
five hour shifts at Camp Korey’s Fall Festival in Carnation, WA.
Monies raised from this fun outdoor event will provide children with
serious or life-threatening illnesses a chance to participate in a week
long summer camp program at Camp Korey at no cost.
In November and December 2009, Greater Seattle alumnae
and Kappa Chapter collegians at the University of Washington supported
the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center by providing wrapped
gifts for forty-six children in time for the Parent Infant Program’s
Holiday Party.

2008 Delta Zeta National
Convention Awards
Kappa
Chapter received the Silver Membership Convention Award for 25
Consecutive Years of Making Quota during Recruitment.
Greater
Seattle received the Alumnae Chapter Excellence Award. This
silver tray award was presented to the top six alumnae chapters for
their overall chapter excellence during the biennium. Greater Seattle
also received this award in 2000, 2004 and 2006.
Greater
Seattle received a Commendation for Outstanding Philanthropy.
Greater
Seattle received the Arlene Newman Marshall Tribute Award. This
award, honoring Delta Zeta Foundation President Arlene Newman Marshall
(1983-87), was presented to two alumnae chapters and one collegiate
chapter who made significant and commendable outreach to others in their
community during the biennium. Greater Seattle was recognized for their
work with Listen and Talk.
Two alumnae
from Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter were selected for the Achoth
Award. This national service award recognizes alumnae who have
volunteered 15+ years of service to Delta Zeta Sorority since their
college days. This year, twenty-three alumnae were recognized at
convention for their volunteer work. Our local recipients were
honored at Founders’ Day on October 26, 2008.

Region X and Great Western Area Awards 2009
Collegians from Region X and alumnae from Great Western
Area met over the April 17-19, 2009 weekend for Region Weekend in Las
Vegas. Kappa Chapter at the University of Washington, Greater Seattle
Alumnae Chapter of Delta Zeta, and local Greater Seattle alumnae were
honored at the Awards Luncheon:
Highest GPA in the Region---Kappa Chapter 3.38
Standards of Excellence Awards for Kappa Chapter
3 star
rating for Alumnae Excellence
2 star rating for Academics, Philanthropy,
Panhellenic, Ritual and Membership
Excellence
1 star rating for Finance Excellence
Collegiate Appreciation Awards—This
award was presented to two Kappa alumnae who were serving in
various advisory positions at Kappa Chapter.
Outstanding Alumnae Public Relations Award—Greater
Seattle Alumnae Chapter
Panhellenic Pride—This
award recognized one alumna in the ten state region and her
contributions to a panhellenic community. This Kappa alumna has
volunteered for fifteen years with the University of Washington College
Panhellenic Association while also serving as a member of Kappa House
Corporation Board.
Alumnae Appreciation Award—This
Kappa alumna was recognized for her fifteen year service as Greater
Seattle Alumnae Chapter’s Treasurer.

Recruitment
Kappa Chapter made quota for the 27th
consecutive year during Fall Recruitment 2009 at the University of
Washington. Thirty-two members were initiated into Kappa Chapter in
November 2009.
Philanthropy Activities
Delta Zetas participated in the Miss Greek Pageant in
April, 2009 and raised funds for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research
Center in Seattle. Delta Zetas raised over $8,000 for cancer research.
The total amount raised by the eleven sorority representatives was
$61,000.
Kappa collegians supported the Greater Seattle Alumnae
Chapter’s Flame Fantasy in April 2009 by providing four gift baskets for
the silent auction. This benefit raised $3,925 for Washington
Sensory Disabilities Services, The Painted Turtle (A Hole in
the Wall Camp), and the Delta Zeta Foundation.
Delta Zetas participated in the Relay for Life, on
the University of Washington campus over May 9-10, 2009. Delta Zeta
sisters raised $1,872 for cancer research. A total of 193 teams (close
to 3,000 participants) raised over $257,755, making the University of
Washington the fourth largest fundraising college for the American
Cancer Society.
For the second consecutive year, Delta Zeta won Sigma
Alpha Epsilon’s philanthropy event, “Feed the Lions,” during Greek Week
in May, 2009. This event raised funds for Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Center.
Delta Zetas sponsored their annual Shell Shock
fundraiser on the University of Washington campus in October 2009 and
raised money for speech and hearing impaired charities.
Leadership Training
During Winter Quarter 2009, Kappa Chapter’s newly elected
officers participated in a local officer training workshop. In February,
the Chapter President attended Delta Zeta’s President’s Academy
in Dallas, Texas. During Spring Quarter 2009, seven chapter
representatives and two advisors attended Region Weekend in Las
Vegas. During the summer of 2009, Kappa Chapter’s President and Vice
President of New Member Education attended the Norma Minch Andrisek
Leadership Conference in Oxford, Ohio.
Awards
At the Region X Weekend in April 2009, Kappa Chapter
received the Highest GPA in the Region Award with an overall 3.38
GPA. The following Standards of Excellence Awards were also presented to
Kappa Chapter: Alumnae Excellence (3 stars); Academic,
Philanthropy, Panhellenic, Ritual, and Membership Excellence
(2 stars); Finance Excellence (1 star).
